If you’re here to learn about state requirements, we have a state-by-state motorcycle insurance requirements here.
Motorcycle Insurance is required in most states. I cannot imagine why anyone would get on a bike knowing full well should they get in an accident, there is no coverage for their medical bills and certainly none for the other parties to the collision. The minimums in this country don’t cover the average 5 year old Kia, much less the nose of a Mercedes, so keep this in mind when buyng a new policy. Owners of high-value or custom motorcycles understand that coverage is paramount to protecting their ride. Helmet laws are another story…
There are a myriad of great sites where you may compare rates real time, some of them even offer the option to buy online. Please remember that he who has the cheapest rate does not necessarily have the right coverage. That name your price idea should not have anything to do with insurance! As they taught us in business class “I didn’t know” will not hold up in front of a jury. Not knowing that you used to have 4 times the minimum liability limit will not only cost you dearly, it will put you on a quest to learn everything there is to know about motorcycle insurance or just insurance in general.
What is property damage liability? We’ll use an example to get the point across: You’re in Tampa, Florida and catch Derek Jeter walking into a restaurant. While you’re catching a glimpse of the man and the beauty on his arm, you slam into his brand new Bentley just as the door man pulls away from the curb. BAM. Damage? $85,000. Your policy covers: $10,000. Where do you think the other $75k is coming from? Sure ain’t Derek’s pocket!
Cost difference if you had taken $100k in property damage liability- let’s just guess $90 a year…
Motorcycle insurance is cheap! Don’t make the mistake of stripping down your policy to save $90 a year while putting yourself in the above predicament.
